How to Update Your Home's Curb Appeal on a Budget

Spring is here which means now is the perfect time to spruce up your home’s front porch. First impressions are everything, and there are numerous ways to liven up your home’s exterior without breaking the bank. Here are 5 ways to perk up your front porch (and your mood!) as you pull in the driveway after a long day.

Add a Wreath

A wreath is a great way to liven up your home’s exterior and make guests feel welcome as soon as they approach the front door. Get crafty and make your own wreath or buy an inexpensive one for around $15-$20 at Home Goods or Kirklands. As the seasons change, swap out your wreath for one that reflects the foliage and colors of the new season. Here are a few of our favorites!

Paint Your Front Door

Painting your front door in a crisp white or even a fun, bold color is a great way to freshen up your home’s exterior. Play off of the colors of your siding and choose a color that adds dimension and interest. No need to buy a whole gallon of paint, you can get the job done with a few 8oz sample sizes for around $10!

Add an Outdoor Mat or Rug

Just like adding a wreath, an outdoor rug or welcome mat is a great way to create a warm, friendly welcome as guests enter your home. Depending on the size of your front porch, select a rug that fits the space without getting in the way of the front door or steps. For a smaller front stoop, try a standard size door mat which can range anywhere from $20-$40. We recommend choosing a material like rubber or a heavy rope such as polypropylene that is heavy duty and can withstand all weather conditions. If you have a larger porch that is covered and you have outdoor furniture, add an outdoor rug underneath your furniture to create a functional and comfortable outdoor living space. This will quickly become a favorite spot for the whole family! Depending on the size, outdoor rugs can range in price, but we recommend checking out Kirklands or Wayfair for inexpensive options starting at $50. Here are a few of our favorites!

Upcycle Furniture

Do you have outdoor furniture that could use a little face-lift? You’d be amazed at what a quick cleaning and paint job can do! If your furniture is in good condition but you hate the color, simply swap out the fabric on the cushions or buy spray paint for a few bucks and repaint the frames and surfaces. Upcycling furniture is not only inexpensive, but you have the freedom to get creative and create your dream lounge space without having to buy all new!

Don’t Underestimate Ferns and Greenery

Potted flowers and hanging baskets is something that almost every homeowner can add to brighten up their front porch for spring and summer. But what if flowers aren’t your cup of tea? If you’ve incorporated pops of color elsewhere like your wreath, an outdoor rug, or your porch furniture, ferns and other greens are an inexpensive and low-maintenance option that can easily replace flowers! Adding hanging ferns and planting others greens in pots can balance out all of the other colors going on and these plants can make a huge statement from the street! Even better, ferns will last through fall, so simply place pumpkins and other fall touches on top of the fern to reflect the new season. Talk about double duty!
